Why Dover Castle Is Cooler Than Other Castles

Wow. Were medieval rooms really this… colourful? I tipped my head quizzically, as though I thought a new angle would correct what spread before me. Vibrant red, blue and gold encircled the room. It hung from the walls, sprawled across the floor and extended toward me on islands of furniture.

“Colour was expensive. Only the homes of nobles and royalty would have been adorned in these rich colours,” my partner, J, said over my shoulder.

And yet, right then, vibrancy floated freely around the room on the backs of the modern visitors to this medieval scene.

Ely Cathedral

As we approached the intricate hollow mountain, singing from its sheltered souls echoed through the vaulted entryway. I stepped back to take in the enormity of the cathedral. Its arches and towers stretched into the sky. Everything seemed focused upward. All the building could comprehend was height.

Lost in amazement I almost didn’t notice my boyfriend tug on my hand. He tilted his head toward a small inconspicuous sign by the entrance to the inner chamber.

Visitors are not allowed to enter the chamber due to service after 4:00 p.m. You are welcome to join the service.

Koh Lanta, Krabi, Thailand

Wiggling my shoulders further down the hammock, my feet creeping up the other side to compensate for the shift, my back pushed into the pillows. The netting snuggled close on my arms, enclosing me but allowing the soft ocean breeze to caress my body through the net. With each soft push the hammock gently swung back and forth.

The sun relentlessly bore down on my surroundings, thankfully deflected by the roof over my hammock. I’d already embraced the sun a bit too much in the earliest day of the trip. For now I was content with my book resting on my stomach, my thumb poised to turn the page.

The trip to Otres Beach in Cambodia had reintroduced me to books and their teleportation abilities were just as mesmerizing at this beach. I gleefully dusted off the key to my imagination and lost myself in the halls of my mind. I’d remain lost each day until the mosques called their followers to prayer and the sun was preparing to dive into the ocean. Continue reading “Koh Lanta, Krabi, Thailand”
