The Snub: Hiking in Glen Clova, Scotland

Embedded in every human being is an instinctual terror of spaces that fail to stimulate our senses. When the woods go quiet. When we can’t place what we are tasting. Or can’t quite register what is crawling across our skin. But the greatest fear of all bubbles to the surface when we lack sight. As a curtain of clouds swallowed the view atop the Snub I marvelled at how suppressed that fear seemed inside of me. Was it experience or lack of it, which was generating this quiet confidence? Highland Hiking: Loch Brandy

My lungs reduced to waterballoons. Calves set on fire. Flecks of snow turned to stray sparks across the skin. The wind icing my bones. The euphoria of looking out from flying lands. Beds of moss abounding. The sun a welcome friend checking in. Sips of water tickling my throat. Some harsh hiking this time around. Continue reading “Highland Hiking: Loch Brandy”

National Museum of Royal Barges: Bangkok, Thailand

I think deep down transportation has always been my favourite aspect of travelling. My earliest travel memories are of the looming noses of planes, little windows with atmospheric wonders, cars — a constant from home — rumbling along through alien landscapes and subway trains being spit out of tunnels. When I think of Bangkok, motorcycle taxies — the little worker-ants of the city — often surface in my memories. However, after exploring the National Museum of Royal Barges my imagination has been chewing on thoughts of parading down the rivers surrounded by the golden boats of the kingdom. Bike Trip: Inverkeithing to Perth

Holy torpedoes that was a crazy ride! I’m normally pretty comfortable in the dark, but riding a bike (without a tail-light I might add) on roads in pitch black is TERRIFYING. And yet, in that insane way only petrifying experiences can invoke, it was EXHILARATING. Maybe the adrenaline got to my head, but flying through the night with no clue about what lies ahead felt like bathing in the universe. Never have I had to rely on blind-faith so explicitly. Berlin: Reichstag Building VS Berliner Dom

“Whoa! Look at that glow! I’ve never seen it like this before!” I chatter, bouncing in place as the red signal glares across the street. Shadows are beginning to form at the bottom of the Berliner Dom.

“C’mon, c’mon.”

Green flashes and J laughs as I sprint across the stripes. Snap. Snap. Snap.

“I’m going to the top! I want to see the city lit by the sunset!”

Huffing up the steps while begging my legs to carry me to the top in time I dash onto the first layer of the viewing deck. Where’s the exit? Where? Where? Where? There! With a twist of the final doorknob I stumble into the sky.

Bonfire Night: Scotland

Pop. Pop. Kipow. Screeeaaachhhh! Pop. Pop. Poppoppopopopopop. Pop……..

The crowd woops and cheers as the announcer jumps to his mike and shouts out a send off. As the crowd thins I gaze over at the empty sky. Something was different about these fireworks. What was it?

Bike To Tentsmuir Forest

“Welcome to the working forest of Tentsmuir,” I read aloud as I skidded to a stop by the sign.

“What so the other forests are unemployed?” J retorted with a grin as she pulled over beside me.

My groan scattered the birds from the trees. Continue reading “Bike To Tentsmuir Forest”

Biking from Dundee to Abroath

It rained, oh it rained. But we were lucky. Up over the next hill, beside a lonely tree, a rainbow dashed across the sky. I broke into a shattered version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow as my bicycle gleefully broke through the puddles splattered across the trail.

“I’m playing puddle-dodger and you’re well… failing!” J piped up as I zigzag across the path.

No I’m succeeding! was all that was going through my mind. I’m hitting every target! Continue reading “Biking from Dundee to Abroath”
